To make room for Andrew Cashner’s return from the disabled list, the Padres have optioned infielder Alexi Amarista back to Triple-A El Paso.
Amarista was hitting .256/.280/.319 with six RBIs and two extra-base hits in 41 games in a part-time role. With the team committed to getting a good look at Ryan Schimpf at second base and the All-Star break around the corner, the Padres are going with an extra arm on the roster for the time being.
Right-handers Paul Clemens and Jose Dominguez joined the Padres this weekend, giving Padres Manager Andy Green an eight-man bullpen for the time being.
