PEORIA, Ariz. — Mark McGwire has acknowledged his interest in being a manager someday. Naturally, the subject came up again Friday.
With San Diego's official skipper, Andy Green, in Mexico City for a weekend of exhibitions, McGwire was mere hours from managing the first of three split-squad games. They could provide a taste of a calling. From home-run collector to hitting coach to first-time bench coach, McGwire appears to be on a logical path toward a future running a major league baseball team.
"I’ve never ruled it out," McGwire said. "When I had the opportunity to come and be Andy’s bench coach, it’s just a fantastic opportunity.
