PEORIA, Ariz. -- The Padres open Cactus League play Saturday against the Mariners. Manager Andy Green said on Wednesday that a little more than a month before the opening of the regular season in Los Angeles, only three players have secured spots in the lineup.
Barring any injuries, newly extended Wil Myers is at first base, Yangervis Solarte will play second or third, and Austin Hedges is the catcher.
That's it. The rest of the positions, including the Opening Day starting pitcher, are up for grabs.
"There's plenty of opportunity out in front of us," said Green, beginning his second season as a big-league skipper after last year's 68-94 last-place finish in the National League West.
