Cal Quantrill on Wednesday will start a game for the first time in nearly three weeks, armed with a new understanding of how to approach in-between work in the Padres’ increasingly unconventional rotation.
Twice on Sunday, the 24-year-old right-hander got up and down in the bullpen before entering the game in the 10th inning. For someone who in college and the minor leagues made 89 of his 90 appearances as a starter, working as a reliever has been an adjustment.
“A regimen is a good thing; routine is good,” Quantrill said. “You want to be a creature of habit, but you can’t be a victim of that habit.
