ATLANTA —
History happens when it is supposed to.
A little more than a month past his 32nd birthday, two years and five days after he was claimed off waivers for the second time, Kirby Yates on Tuesday accomplished something no major leaguer ever had.
His 14th save of the season gave him the most by any reliever before May.
That’s an especially quick start for a guy who didn’t get the Padres closer job until last July, after Brad Hand was traded to the Indians.
Yates has yet to blow a save in 2019, and the only run he allowed was in a non-save situation on April 3.
