Three weeks from now, baseball executives and other staff members among with media, job seekers, and fans, will gather in Las Vegas for the 2018 Baseball Winter Meetings. At the end of the four-day event will be the Rule 5 Draft. And today is the deadline for teams to protect players from being taken in that draft by adding them to the 40-man roster.
The Rule 5 Draft is held each December at the end of the Winter Meetings and is meant as a way to prevent teams from hoarding all the best players in their farm system when those players could potentially be getting Major League playing time with other teams.
