SAN DIEGO -- Christian Villanueva thought about letting Javier Baez's slow ground ball roll foul. Instead of going foul, however, the ball hit the bag and ricocheted for an infield single.
That's all the Cubs had to do to defeat the Padres, 5-4, in 10 innings on Friday night at Petco Park.
The speedy Baez put the pressure on the defense and stole second, leading to two of the Padres' most dependable defenders committing errors on the same play. Austin Hedges' throw to second ended up in center field, and Manuel Margot booted the catch while Baez raced home to score the go-ahead run.
