TORONTO -- The Padres have agreed to a trade sending Melvin Upton Jr. to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for a Class A prospect, according to a report by MLB Network contributor Ken Rosenthal on Tuesday. Neither club has confirmed the deal.
The prospect is right-hander Hansel Rodriguez, according to a report by MLB Network's Jon Heyman. Rodriguez is the Blue Jays' No. 18 prospect as ranked by MLBPipeline.com.
Upton is owed approximately $22 million through the end of next season, meaning the Padres will likely absorb some of his salary.
Upton was one of the Padres' steadiest players this season.
