PEORIA, Ariz. — The Padres topped the Kansas City Royals, 3-1, Friday night for their first Cactus League win.
San Diego (1-2) tied the game in the seventh on a double by catcher Austin Hedges, who also made a notable contribution behind the plate. In the sixth, Hedges cut down Terrance Gore, one of the game's fastest baserunners, with a throw to second that the Padres clocked at between 1.79 and 1.84 seconds.
"He’s been putting in a ton of work with (hitting coach) Alan Zinter," Padres manager Andy Green said. "There’s been a lot of effort getting him separation in his upper half.
