For the first time in more than 17 seasons, the Padres will have a pitching coach other than Darren Balsley.
The team has agreed to terms with Larry Rothschild to become their pitching coach, while Balsley is expected to assume a role as special assistant working with minor league pitchers.
Rothschild spent the past nine seasons as pitching coach for the Yankees. He has worked in the majors since 1986, including from 1998 to 2001 as the first manager of the Tampa Bay Rays.
New Padres manager Jayce Tingler is expected to officially name his entire staff by next week.
