For an organization that had for a time piecemealed rotations out of veteran acquisitions like Clayton Richard, Edwin Jackson and Christian Friedrich, the Padres having their farm system produce 68 rookie starts in 2019 — second-most in the majors — at least appeared to be in line with the long-term plan to self-sustain success, even if those youngsters took it on the chin from time to time.
