PEORIA, Ariz. —
The Padres added Juan Lagares to their outfield competition, agreeing to terms with the veteran on a minor-league deal.
The 30-year-old Lagares, who has primarily played center field, has spent all seven of his major league seasons with the New York Mets. He was granted free agency in November after hitting .213 with a .279 on-base percentage in 2019. The right-handed batter is a career .254/.297 hitter.
The bulk of starts in center field seem to be Trent Grisham’s to lose, and Franchy Cordero is a front-runner to play ample innings there if healthy.
