Padres set player pool at 52 for now, including top prospects

The Padres believe they have a roster that can compete in the shortest season in Major League Baseball history, but it was also no surprise that the organization compiled its pool of players for the 2020 season with an eye on development for the future.

Infielder CJ Abrams, pitcher Ryan Weathers and outfielder Robert Hassell III, the 18-year-old drafted in the first round fewer than three weeks ago, were among the top prospects the Padres will bring to San Diego for their preseason summer camp that begins Friday.

Those three, along with pitcher Joey Cantillo, catcher Luis Campusano, infielders Gabriel Arias and Tucupita Marcano and outfielder Hudson Head, are not targeted to play in the major leagues this season.
