CHICAGO —
In the midst of a 2019 season that has slipped to the brink, the Padres got their first glimpse at how the organization backing up the Brink’s truck in 2016 might pay off.
The difference was rookie Francisco Mejia’s line drive home run that just cleared the ivy in right field in the seventh inning.
The bulk of the lifting in a 5-1 victory that ended a three-game losing streak was done by players brought into the organization over a several-month span in 2016 — including three RBIs by Fernando Tatis Jr. and some fine pitching by Adrian Morejon and Cal Quantrill.
