The Padres released veteran shortstop Alexei Ramirez on Sunday.
Ramirez, who will turn 35 later this month, posted a .240/.275/.330 slash line this season -- with his .605 OPS being the lowest mark of his nine-year MLB career. San Diego acquired Ramirez as a free agent this past offseason, after he had played his entire career to that point with the White Sox.
In eight seasons with Chicago, Ramirez hit .273/.310/.399, and was an All-Star in 2014.
Ramirez had recently been learning to play the corner-outfield positions to stay in the lineup, as prospects Jose Rondon and Luis Sardinas were given playing time at short.
