The Padres have recalled outfielder Jose Pirela from El Paso and optioned right-hander Leonel Campos back to the Triple-A affiliate.
Pirela, 26, was acquired from the New York Yankees over the offseason in exchange for pitching prospect Ronald Herrera. He came close to making the team as a reserve out of spring training, but the Padres opted instead to go with center fielder Travis Jankowski and Rule 5 addition Jabari Blash, another corner outfielder, on the bench.
The addition of Pirela to the roster could spell trouble for Blash, who must remain on the 25-man roster all season or be offered back to Seattle.
