SEATTLE — The Padres' 2016 season reached its nadir Tuesday afternoon.
James Shields, whom the Padres have discussed in a potential trade with the Chicago White Sox, recorded eight outs in one of the worst starts of his career. Seattle Mariners starter Hisashi Iwakuma was perfect through four innings. In the bottom of the fifth, Padres catcher Christian Bethancourt moved from behind the plate to left field. In the bottom of the eighth, he made his professional pitching debut. The Padres' margin of defeat, 16-4, was their worst since a 15-0 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on opening day.
