The Padres on Wednesday placed second baseman Cory Spangenberg on the 15-day disabled list and selected the contract of infielder Jemile Weeks from Triple-A El Paso.
To make room for Weeks on the 40-man roster, left-hander Buddy Baumann, who was limited by a lower back strain throughout spring training, was transferred to the 60-day DL.
Spangenberg suffered a left quad strain diving headfirst into first base on a bunt single Tuesday night. His replacement, Alexi Amarista, tweaked a hamstring later in the game and is considered day-to-day.
Weeks, 29, will start at second base and bat eighth Wednesday night against the Pittsburgh Pirates.
