The Padres placed utility infielder Alexi Amarista on the 15-day disabled list Saturday with a strained right hamstring. The move is retroactive to Wednesday.
In eight games this season, Amarista was 7-for-21 (.333) with a pair of stolen bases. The club recalled Saturday starter Cesar Vargas from Double-A San Antonio as a corresponding move. But in reality, reinforcements for Amarista arrived Friday in the form of outfielder Jose Pirela, who has some experience at second base. Pirela made his Padres debut on Friday as a pinch-hitter and doubled.
Vargas arrived in San Diego before Friday's game, but the club didn't need to make a corresponding move until Saturday.
