Padres pile on in 10th to overcome historic bullpen meltdown

SAN FRANCISCO —

The bullpen that was supposed to be the Padres’ greatest weapon misfired for a second straight night and the third time this season.

The Padres scored five runs in the 10th inning to earn a 12-7 victory and their second series win to start the season, but that hardly soothed growing nervousness about this surprisingly shaky corps of relievers.

First, the ending:

Playing their first time with the this-year-only extra-innings rule that places a runner on second at the start of each inning, the Padres had the heart of their order up in the 10th and had the first six runners reach base before making an out.
