Padres' opening-day payroll below $100 million

The Padres' opening-day payroll is expected to be a little more than $99 million, down from last season's club-record sum of $108 million. Three veterans — James Shields, Matt Kemp and Melvin Upton Jr. — account for $55,300,000 in combined commitments, or roughly 56 percent of the payroll.

Below is a breakdown of obligations for the 25-man roster, which was set Sunday morning. Rule 5 reliever Josh Martin, who was added to the roster, will be designated for assignment, with utility infielder Adam Rosales set to take his place.

  • SP James Shields: $21,000,000
  • OF Matt Kemp: $18,250,000 (Dodgers will pay an additional $3,500,000)
  • OF Melvin Upton Jr.
