Padres notes: Yates’ record roll needs to slow; lead-off spot shows pulse; Margevicius’ stick

SAN FRANCISCO —

Trevor Hoffman and Rich Gossage closed for the Padres for varying durations along their way to the Hall of Fame. Heath Bell made three All-Star appearances when he was the Padres closer. Huston Street and Brad Hand made two.

None of them started a season as suddenly successful as Kirby Yates has in 2019.

Yates became the quickest Padres closer to get to seven saves in a season, doing it in the 13th game of the season.

“Any time you tie a closer record in a Padres uniform, that’s really impressive,” Green said.
