Padres notes: Tatis, Machado will keep taking chances; Mejia and the churve; new umpire

Atlanta’s Nick Markakis sent a chopper to shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr.’s right in Friday’s third inning.

Tatis did not have to run terribly far, but the slow speed of the grounder and Markakis’ decent running speed up the line forced an instantaneous mid-air decision.

Of course, because it is what he does, Tatis made the throw back across his body as he leaped the opposite way.

The ball bounced wide and rolled to the side wall as Dansby Swanson ran from first to third.

“He has the arm strength to get it over there and make it a play,” infield coach Damion Easley said.
