Padres notes: Renfroe’s rally; Lucchesi’s mind games; Reyes’ walks; Stammen’s save

TORONTO —

In recounting his fateful eighth-inning at-bat in Friday night’s 6-3 victory over the Blue Jays, Hunter Renfroe summed up so much of what is right with him this season.

“He threw me two fastballs right down the middle,” Renfroe said of the first two pitches he saw from Blue Jays right-hander Daniel Hudson. “I was a little upset with myself for not swinging at them. But I was able to get my two strike approach down and battle and was able to hit a ball enough on the barrel to hit it out.”

He fell behind, was frustrated, shook it off to the extent that he fouled off a borderline pitch and then, even with his bottom hand two inches up the bat’s handle, turned on an inside fastball and sent it just beyond the wall in left field for a three-run home run.
