Cal Quantrill conquered his slump.
Now he can rest.
With less than a week left in the season, the Padres announced their rookie right-hander will not pitch again this year. Quantrill threw 138 2/3 innings in his third full season of pro ball, including 103 in this first year in the majors.
He pitched five innings of one-run ball on Saturday in what turned out to be his season finale.
It was needed. Quantrill had a 15.12 ERA over his previous four starts.
“If you’re not learning from those tough times and getting better because of them, you’re going to go through them again and it’s going to get longer,” Quantrill said Tuesday afternoon.
