In contract talks that began in the offseason, it was made clear to Fernando Tatis Jr. that the Padres would like to keep him around for a long time. Tatis has said he wants to be a significant part of the franchise’s history, to win championships and have his statue join those of Tony Gwynn and Trevor Hoffman.
That sounds good to the Padres.
“We acknowledge he is a generational talent,” Executive Chairman Ron Fowler said Monday but declined to comment further.
Talks between the sides never reached a point where they could be considered substantive before the season was put on hold.
