Rather than shut down Chris Paddack or give him another extended rest in the interest of the long-term good, the Padres seem inclined to keep his rookie season going in the interest of the long-term good.
“You want to see him overcome something too,” manager Andy Green said. “We think he can. We know he can. We’re confident in Chris.”
The Padres are counting on Paddack pitching without restrictions in 2020. The thinking is that to pull the plug at less than 120 innings, when they want the full six months and 180 or more innings out of him next season would create a nearly impossible jump for him to make.
