Padres notes: Machado’s slump assessment; Lamet’s prognostication; Hosmer’s helmet

PHILADELPHIA —

Manny Machado isn’t much for analysis.

He denied there was anything pitchers were doing differently this month, which entering Saturday had seen him go 9-for-57 (.158) with no home runs in 14 games.

“No, I just suck,” Machado said Saturday before the Padres beat the Phillies 5-3 at Citizens Bank Park. “It’s baseball. You go through those. I’m just hitting it right at people. The beauty of this game. Long-ass season, long grind. At the end of the year, I’ll be where I need to be. I’m not worried about that.”

His assessment that he is simply riding the season’s ebb and flow is echoed by others in the organization.
