Petco Park’s ground rules stole a home run from Manny Machado on Wednesday and left him with the fourth-longest single in the major leagues this season.
Machado’s blast, with runners on first and third, traveled an estimated 403 feet, bounced between two sections of padded wall, caromed off the small lip that rises just inches above the wall’s front portion and landed back in left-center field.
“It is what it is,” manager Andy Green said after the Padres’ 8-7 win over the Brewers. “They’re our ground rules. Nobody is going to try to sit here and split hairs with it.
