Padres notes: Luchessi stumbles, Quantrill stronger at finish; offense produces big inning

ANAHEIM —

If Joey Lucchesi and Cal Quantrill were truly in a battle for the final spot in the starting rotation, it was Quantrill making the slightly stronger final impression.

Neither pitched as well as they had leading up to Wednesday night, an exhibition at Angel Stadium that the Padres won 5-4 and concluded summer camp in advance of Friday’s season opener against the Diamondbacks.

Quantrill finished well after a rough start to his initial inning, in which he allowed three singles before a double-play grounder and strikeout got him out of the fifth inning having limited the Angels to one run.
