Eric Hosmer didn’t have a hit in the season’s first two games and grounded out in the first inning of the third game.
So after taking a strike in his second at-bat Saturday against Dereck Rodriguez, with the Giants’ infield shifted right, Hosmer attempted a sort of drag bunt toward third base.
“Just trying to get something going,” Hosmer said of the earnest try that resulted in a foul ball.
After taking the next pitch for a ball, Hosmer lined a single to center field for his first hit of the season and the Padres’ first hit of the game.
