Before hitting 104 mph for the first time at Double-A Amarillo, Andres Munoz’s fastball projected as a legitimate big league weapon. The key to unlocking its true potential, however, is his developing slider. On Friday, the Padres deemed both offerings big league ready.
The 20-year-old Munoz was recalled from Amarillo on Friday to start the second half. To make room on the 40-man roster, right-hander Phil Maton was traded to the Indians for international bonus money.
“It’s really exciting,” Munoz said through an interpreter before Friday’s game against the Braves. “It’s a really happy moment and an exciting moment for me and my family and everything we’ve had to sacrifice to be here.
