SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Once upon a time, Jemile Weeks had an opportunity to sign with the team that made his brother, Rickie, the second pick in the country. Then the younger Weeks brother had opportunities in the Orioles and Red Sox organization over the years, though not as bountiful as his Oakland days as the 12th overall pick in 2008 out of the University of Miami. As the 29-year-old Jemile Weeks scanned the landscape this offseason, his first as a minor league free agent, the sheer amount of opportunity available in San Diego stood out above all else as the former first-rounder looked for a place to reboot his career.
