A lot of fans were expecting a starting pitcher to be the focus for the Padres on deadline day and it was...sort of. Martin Perez was the one starter A.J. Preller acquired before Tuesday’s 3 p.m. PT MLB trade deadline. That’s not a name anyone was talking about.
What the real focus ended up being was to make the Padres bullpen as strong as it could be. There have been times this year where Mike Shildt has had to keep going back to Robert Suarez, Jeremiah Estrada and/or Adrian Morejon because those guys have been the only consistent arms in the ‘pen.
