Padres look for Paddack to curve things up beginning vs. Giants

SAN FRANCISCO —

They weren’t strikes, any three of the change-ups below the zone that the Phillies’ J.T. Realmuto let go by.

But they were the kind of pitches that prompted swings more often earlier in the season.

Realmuto, however, let the offerings pass to get to a 3-1 count before fouling off three fastballs and lining a fourth fastball to left field for a single to start the fourth inning in Chris Paddack’s last start.

Paddack is finding something similar happening more than it was when he arrived in the big leagues a little more than two months ago and retired the first 10 Giants batters he faced or a month later when he retired 19 straight at the end of an outing against the Mariners.
