Alan Wiggins wasn’t bragging about his speed on the basepaths.
Just relaying facts.
“There are so many variables to throw into the formula,” Wiggins told the Evening Tribune after swiping a Padres record five bases on this date — May 17 — in 1984. “Like how fast a pitcher throws the ball or how quick the catcher releases it. But I guess if I get a good jump, there’s not too much chance of them getting me.”
Funny thing is, Wiggins was actually caught on this day.
Caught napping, that is.
Expos pitcher Greg Harris picked Wiggins off second base in the bottom of the sixth inning after he singled and moved to second on Tony Gwynn’s walk.
