The Padres believed enough in Mat Latos to spend $1.25 million on him when he slipped to the 11th round of the 2006 draft due to questions about his maturity. His talent was on display during a road trip early in his second big league season when the 22-year-old was not allowed to finish what he’d started with eight shutout innings in Houston.
Latos was sitting on another eight shutout innings his next time out, on this date — May 13 — in 2010 when Padres manager Bud Black gave him a green light for the ninth in a 1-0 game in San Francisco.
