Jack McKeon sounded like every general manager on draft day after selecting Arkansas outfielder Kevin McReynolds with the sixth overall pick on this date — June 8 — in 1981.
“For our purposes, he was the best guy in the draft,” McKeon told the San Diego Union. “We wanted a right-handed power hitter with speed and the ability to make it to the majors fairly soon. Given our needs, he was the perfect choice — he was the No. 1 guy on our list.”
McKeon probably would have liked a mulligan on that list, as future Hall of Famer Tony Gwynn landed in the Padres’ lap the next day in the third round.
