Mark Thurmond gave up a two-run homer in the fifth inning to put the Padres behind the eight-ball in Game 1 of the 1984 World Series. Ed Whitson lasted two-thirds of an inning in his Game 2 start. Tim Lollar didn’t get out of the second in his, Eric Show didn’t complete the third inning in his start and Thurmond recorded just one out in his second World Series appearance.
This is why Padres General Manager Jack McKeon had LaMarr Hoyt’s name circled as he landed in Houston in December for that offseason’s winter meetings.
The White Sox asking price: Lollar, Ozzie Guillen, Bill Long and Luis Salazar.
