The native San Diegan had limped through the start of the 1987 Padres season when he logged his first career two-homer game on this date — July 1 — in 1987.
“I’ve had trouble trying to relax at home,” the 25-year-old Mitchell told the San Diego Union after Eric Show completed a 4-0 win at Dodger Stadium. “Friends are always coming over to see me. I come to the ballpark tired out because it’s tough for me to say no.
