There was a time when Everth Cabrera looked like he’d add himself to a short list of genuine steals in the Rule 5 draft — like on this date — Aug. 7 — in 2009 when the 22-year-old rookie walked off a 6-2 victory over the visiting New York Mets with a grand slam.
It was only his second homer in 52 games since he was plucked from the Rockies’ system and dropped onto a big league active roster. Cabrera had fallen behind 0-2 against closer Francisco Rodriguez before hitting only the second walk-off grand slam in Padres history.
