The Padres were in first place at the trade deadline in July 2010. General Manager Jed Hoyer believed some extra outfield production would boost their surprise run. On this date—Aug. 10—Ryan Ludwick provided his first real glimpse of what the Padres were after with a two-homer game to power a 4-1 victory over the Pirates at Petco Park.
To that point, Ludwick was 5-for-28 with one extra-base hit after the Padres gave two minor league pitchers in the three-team deal that netted Ludwick from St. Louis.
“You definitely don’t want to mess anything up,” Ludwick told the Union-Tribune after the game.
