The Padres and the Indians went back-and-forth Thursday afternoon on a beautiful day out in Peoria Stadium. San Diego got some early momentum from a pair of homers in the second and fourth by Wil Myers and Eri Hosmer, repectively, but it was Jorge Mateo’s walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the ninth that was the different in this one as the Friars walked away with the 5-4 spring win.
Joe Musgrove was the Padres’ starting pitcher, working a rare three innings and allowing four hits, two runs, with one strikeout. Mason Fox and Nabil Crismatt combined to close out the final two innings, allowing a lone hit and striking out three.
