Padres draft CJ Abrams, prep shortstop from Georgia, No. 6 overall

The Padres have selected an arm to begin each draft under A.J. Preller. The potential of CJ Abrams’ speed and athleticism lured them into bucking that trend this year.

Abram was drafted sixth overall in Monday’s draft, the first position players selected by the Padres since Hunter Renfroe and Trea Turner were both chosen 13th overall in the 2013 and 2014 drafts.

The sixth overall pick this year is paired with a recommended signing bonus of $5.74 million.

Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman and Texas prep shortstop Bobby Witt Jr., as expected, went first and second overall to the Orioles and Royals, respectively.
