Turns out, one of the Padres catchers who is struggling at the plate has been playing with a balky knee.
Francisco Mejia, one half of the majors’ second-worst catching tandem, was placed on the injured list Saturday with a left knee sprain. A team source said Mejia has been bothered by the knee for weeks.
The team recalled Austin Allen from Triple-A. He will join the team at Coors Field.
The 25-year old, who is the Padres’ sixth-ranked position prospect. He is batting .279/.358/.529 with six homers and eight doubles in 120 Triple-A plate appearances this season.
