The Padres have added a veteran right-hander to their bullpen, agreeing to a two-year deal with Pierce Johnson, a source said late Sunday.
Jeff Passan of ESPN reported the deal is worth $5 million and has a team option for 2022.
Johnson, 28, spent last season in Japan after pitching in the majors for the Giants in 2018.
He posted a 1.84 ERA and struck out 91 in 58 2/3 innings for the Hanshin Tigers.
The Padres continue to explore options to add a starting pitcher, but it has also been their contention that the current rotation is sufficient to help the team contend as long as they bolster the bullpen with arms that can work various situations and for an inning or more at a time.
