The Padres have traded for veteran right-hander Phil Hughes, who was designated for assignment by the Twins earlier this week, the club announced on Sunday.
It is believed that Minnesota will cover the rest of Hughes' 2018 salary and a little over half his '19 salary, which is $13.2 million. As part of the deal, the Padres have also acquired the No. 74 overall pick in this year's Draft and sent catcher Janigson Villalobos to Minnesota.
When a player's contract is designated for assignment -- often abbreviated "DFA" -- that player is immediately removed from his club's 40-man roster, and 25-man roster if he was on that as well.
