The Padres believe Carl Edwards can benefit from a change of scenery. The Cubs believe the same of Brad Wieck.
So the two teams on Wednesday swapped relievers ahead of Major League Baseball’s new hard trading deadline.
The Padres also received $500,000 in international bonus money.
“With (Edwards), that’s a guy who’s been one of the better relievers in the NL the last four years,” Padres General Manager A.J. Preller said. “… That was a project we wanted to take on and see where it lands in the next year.”
Edwards was originally drafted by the Rangers in 2011 and signed by current Padres international scouting director Chris Kemp.
