Last year, the Mets rookie starter Noah Syndergaard earned the nickname Thor, but tonight Jon Jay made him look a little more like Thunderstrike. Jay went 3-for-4 with a run and RBI in a performance that was key to the Padres' first shutout victory of the season. And Syndergaard wasn't the only Met whose hammer was on the fritz tonight. The New York bats managed only three hits against Friar pitching while striking out nine times.
Jay led off the game with a double to left. A ground out put him on third, and then Matt Kemp hit a sacrifice fly to generate the only lead the team would need.
