One-time Padre Gary Sheffield on sixth Hall of Fame ballot

The lasting impact of Gary Sheffield in San Diego, wherever his star was pointed in the summer of 1993, is fetching a future Hall of Fame closer in a fire sale trade.

Still, Sheffield earned the first of nine All-Star selections as a Padre. He hit 43 of his 509 homers in parts of two seasons in San Diego. He was easily on his way to becoming the best third baseman in Padres history.

Is he one of the best players in baseball history?

With only 13.6 percent of vote on the most recent Hall of Fame ballot, Sheffield has a long way to go to convince the voters of the Baseball Writers Association of America.
